Urban is an adjective that technically enters into the English language in the early seventeenth century but is not commonly used until the mid-nineteenth century. In the United States, urban areas are defined by a population of more than 1,000 people per block of area. Rural areas are the least populated areas. Suburban areas have a larger population than rural areas; however, urban areas have a larger population than both. At one time, a location was urban if there were high-rise office buildings and no houses close by, suburban if there were merely low-rise office buildings and many houses nearby, and rural if there were no office buildings and lots of farms, ranches, and vacant land close by.
